American Airlines to Extend Five European Routes Past Summer Travel Season

American Airlines is extending five European routes past September, according to schedule data from Cirium. The carrier will continue flights from three of its hubs, in Dallas, Charlotte, and Philadelphia.

Increasing Europe flights

Likely due to solid demand for travel to Europe, Fort Worth-based American Airlines has extended flights on five European routes through winter. The extension includes routes from Charlotte to Madrid, Philadelphia to Barcelona and Lisbon, and Dallas to Dublin and Rome. The alteration of American’s schedule has added more than 300 flights in November and December.

As of last week, flights between Charlotte and Madrid were scheduled to end on October 27. Cirium data is only available through the end of March 2024; it appears that American is making the route available year-round, with flights scheduled through the end of March. The exact dates apply to the Philadelphia-Lisbon route and Dallas to Dublin. Flights to Rome were scheduled to end one day after the previously mentioned routes, on October 28, and are also scheduled daily through January 7. Daily flights will resume on February 15 and are scheduled through the end of March.

The Philadelphia to Barcelona route has two interesting gaps in the schedule between September 2023 and March 2024. Flights are scheduled daily through October 4 before temporarily pausing and resuming on the 29. After running daily through January 7, flights will pause again, this time for longer, until February 15, like the Dallas-Rome route. The schedule may be affected by delayed aircraft deliveries. Simple Flying has contacted American for comment but has not received a reply at the time of publication.

The changes in today’s Cirium report show a drastic increase year-over-year in flights to Europe from Dallas, Charlotte, and Philadelphia this winter. American will fly to 13 European destinations this winter between the three hubs.

Resuming Flights to Auckland

A few days ago, Simple Flying reported that American was set to resume its flights between Los Angeles International Airport and Auckland Airport from December 21, as published by other publications. Data from today’s schedule change report from Cirium confirms the rumors. As of today, the carrier will fly daily to Auckland until February 14, 2024. After the 14, the carrier will connect the two cities thrice weekly until March 2. American also flies seasonally from Dallas to Auckland, and flights are set to resume on October 28 and run through March 2024.

Competition is heating up on routes between the United States and the South Pacific, with United Airlines announcing its largest-ever schedule and expansion to the region last week. The Chicago-based carrier has the largest schedule of any American carrier flying between the two regions.
