TikTok Commits to Improved Consumer Communication in Hungary

Chinese-owned video-sharing social networking service TikTok has made commitments to improve its communication with consumers in Hungary on the platform’s features and the scope of user data it processes, the Competition Office (GVH) said on Thursday, according to a report by state news wire MTI.

TikTok Technology Ltd’s commitment was made in the context of a probe GVH launched in 2020 on suspicion the company was “not providing consumers with the professional care required by the principles of good faith and fairness”.

GVH closed the probe, “without finding an infringement or lack thereof”, while accepting TikTok’s commitment to take steps that ensure Hungarian consumers are made aware of the service’s features and can make better-informed choices.

TikTok has pledged to create a Data Privacy Centre for information purposes, offer consumers videos on key features of the service, set daily screen time limits as a default for users under 18, apply a voluntary 20% advertising limit, and strengthen forums suitable for direct feedback from the authorities and other child protection groups.

GVH said the concluded case would have “a global impact…felt by users worldwide”, noting the commitment by TikTok to establish the centralized online Data Privacy Center.

The accurate and timely implementation of the commitments will be subject to a rigorous ex-post investigation by GVH, the watchdog said.
